Thank You for Supporting Shareware!
This program can be easily adapted to individuals hardware and procedural
requirements. If such a need arises, such as a printer definition not
supplied with the shareware version, or the ability to run this program on a
network, please contact me in regards to customization or additional
requirements.
Planned enhancements (as of February 25 1991):
1. Modem/Phone Dialer.
2. Multiple user calendar/appointment files.
3. Group scheduling and reporting.
4. Schedule/appointment contention warning.
The Shareware concept:
Shareware IS NOT freeware. The programs, documentation, and associated files
are not in the public domain. If you use this product, find it useful, and
have passed a certain 'trial period' you are expected to register. This
trial period is thirty (30) days. Registration provides for the continued
support, modification, and enhancements to be made. Registration also grants
the user addition support in the area of printed documentation, telephone and
BBS support, and access to upgrades as they become available.
As specified in the License portion of this document, you are only permitted
to make archival copies for backup and to protect yourself from loss. You
can however, make copies of the shareware version in order to distribute it
among friends, co-workers, etc., as long as ALL the files, documentation, and
programs are included with the copies. After all, that is the whole idea
behind SHAREWARE.
NOTE to BBS Sysops, disk vendors, and others involved in the usual shareware
marketing chain:
This section provides information for disk vendors on the distribution of
Leadman, the Personal Contact Manager.
Please note that our policy on distribution of LeadMan by disk vendors is the
same for both commercial vendors and non-profit user group libraries.
We would be pleased to work with you in the distribution of our product, as
disk vendors and user groups are an important part of the shareware
distribution system. We will also do our best to keep you up to date with
the latest version.
Clearly explain the shareware concept, the need for users to register
products they use, and the fact that the price of your disks is a copying fee
only and does not constitute payment for the product. The material must also
differentiate between shareware and public domain software. We aren't
concerned with what language you use or how concise or detailed the
information is, but it must explain these basic concepts or we will not be
confident that users are fully informed about what they are (and are not)
purchasing. It is not sufficient to state that you explain these issues to
customers in person, it must be reflected in your written materials.
What is LeadMan?
LeadMan is a personal contact and time management system that combines
information about people you know, things you do, places you go, and what you
think, into one menu accessed computer application. Each section of the
application (the Contact Manager, Time Manager, and Notebook) allows for
keeping information about the particular subject in note files associated
with each record.

From the main menu that looks like the above illustration, your can access
each function of LeadMan by using the <up> and <down> cursor keys (arrows) or
by pressing the first letter of your choice and then pressing the <Enter> key.
The consistent use of the <ENTER>, <INSERT>, and <DELETE> keys is from the
table screens. <ENTER> is always used to display or change information,
<INSERT> or <INS> is always used to ADD records, and <DELETE> or <DEL> is
always used to remove information.
Another consistency is the use of <CTRL> key sequences to execute other
functions. For example, while in the Contact section <CTRL-N> will bring up
the NOTES associated with the contact record you are currently working on.
The same key sequence is used in the Time Manager section to bring up NOTES
for the day you are accessing. <CTRL-Enter> is used whenever you want to
save a NOTE you are working on, and <CTRL-ESC> is used to abandon any changes
and EXIT want you are working on. In two instances, <CTRL-ESC> is also used
to EXIT a section. The first instance is when you are accessing the Time
Manager, the second instance is when you want to exit LeadMan completely
(from the Main menu).
A final word on special keys: From anywhere in the application the F1 key
will access the HELP system supplied with LeadMan. I've tried to anticipate
where users will have the most problems, but I am sure to miss a few. Your
feedback on improving the HELP system will be GREATLY appreciated.
**** NOTE ****
Since these user defined fields are recorded in each record, I STRONGLY
SUGGEST that the first thing you do when use this system is SET UP YOUR OWN
USER FIELD DEFINITIONS. I have included this suggestion with the README
accompanying this software in order to reinforce this suggestion. The next
page of this document gives some samples of fields that you may want to
consider when using this program.
User Defined Fields:
LeadMan as supplied DOES NOT contain useful definitions for the User Defined
fields that are used in the Contact section. The main menu option 'Other
Options, when selected will bring up a screen similar to this:

Some suggestions on User Fields:
Enter definitions that are more or less pertinent to your line of work or
interest. Enter things like Title, Secretary, Wife, Kids, Car Model,
Birthday, PC model, Last Call, Software, Business Type, Account Number,
Customer Number, etc. You can, of course, always change them later, but in
order to keep what information you enter into these fields consistent,
changing them at a later time would mean accessing every record and making
the changes by hand. If you set up meaningful definitions in the first
place, you may never have to go back and make changes later. ALSO, the FIRST
TWO USER FIELDS CAN BE USED AS KEYS TO DO SPECIALIZED ACCESS TO THE DATABASE.
These fields should contain information that has a special relationship to
the data you are recording.
To change an entry in the Users Fields Table, Highlight it using the cursor
control keys ( the <UP> and <DOWN> arrows), and type in the information.
Press <Enter> to record the changed field and proceed to the next one. Press
'CTRL-ENTER' to save your changes and return to the 'Other Options' menu.
For purposes of this documentation, the Contact screens will contain the
following User field definitions:
User1 Category
User2 Type
User3 PC Model
User4 Hardware
User5 Software
User6 Title
User7 Last Call
User8 Memo
After the User fields have been defined, you are ready to begin entering your
Contact information.
The Contacts Section:
The Contact section is where you enter the names, addresses, phone numbers,
and other pertinent information about the people you have contact with.
Sounds simple enough right. In addition to the information you keep in the
individuals record, you can also keep a note record assigned to each
individual record. At this time, to make sure the record can be processed
properly, the note is limited to about 16,000 bytes (about eight pages of
printed text).
When the <ENTER> key is pressed on the Contacts item from the main menu, your
screen will change to something that looks like the following:
╔═════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗

╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
This menu shows the current methods of accessing the records in your contact
file. As you can see, you can access your data by DATE (from low to high,
old to new, from now till then, or however else you want to look at it).
By NAME (taken as a whole - meaning by FIRST NAME). By COMPANY (again taken
as a whole). And by the USER FIELDS you defined .
The reasoning behind the explanations is not to allow for surprises such as
companies beginning with the word 'THE' all showing up together. My
suggestion is to follow the phone books example and basically ignore the
'The'. To make better use of the indexing capabilities of LeadMan, when you
need to enter a company name like 'The Bunker Gallery', enter it as "Bunker
Gallery, The" or simply "Bunker Gallery". You will see this technique used
later in this document as I show more screens.
The first time you enter a contact record it doesn't make any difference
which item you use, because the system will detect that no records are
present and automatically bring up the ENTRY SCREEN.
The Contact Entry Screen:
Upon entering a contact for the first time you will be presented with a
screen that looks like this:
╔══════════════════╤══════════════════════════════════╤═════════════════════╗
║ LeadMan │ Record will be Added │ 2/14/91 9:41 ║
╠══════════════════╧════════════════╤═════════════════╧═════════════════════╣

║ to Select Ctrl-Esc to Quit Ctrl-N for Notebook ║
║ F1 - HELP Ctrl-Enter To Save Ctrl-C for Calendar ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
The screen is divided into two sections. The left half of the screen is
where information concerning the contact is displayed. The right half of the
screen is where the NOTES will 'pop-up' when <CTRL-N> is pressed. The
section where "Category", "Type", etc. is displayed is where you can keep
information tailored to your particular interests. For demonstration
purposes, the user fields as I have them defined are as follows:
User1 Category
User2 Type
User3 PC Model
User4 Hardware
User5 Software
User6 Title
User7 Last Call
User8 Memo
The cursor will be on the line marked 'Next Call' and will be waiting for
input for the date and time you want to schedule a call on this contact.
For ease of entering data, all the fields on this screen will automatically
advance when the allocated space has been filled.
Another area to pay close attention to is filling out of the 'Next Call',
'Name', 'Company', and the first two User Fields. Because these fields are
used to create the index areas, careful consideration must be put on what
information is entered. For example, one of the indexes is based on 'Next
Call'. When entering the Contact system, you are prompted for which index to
use to access the Contact data. The 'Record by Date' entry will only show
Contact records that have information in the 'Next Call' fields of the
record. This helps in creating quicker access to those contacts that have
been specified as needing a follow-up phone call. The other side of this is
to eliminate entries from showing up on the 'Record by Date' table is to
bypass the date and time entries of the 'Next Call' field. If these entries
are blank (or zeros) they will NOT be displayed in the table. The same idea
holds true for the 'Name', 'Company', and 'User' fields. This allows for
some flexibility in the creation of Contact records, and what records are
displayed in the tables.
After you have entered data into each field, the data will be stored to the
CONTACT database. Any time you want to add a note to this record you can do
so by pressing <CTRL-N>.
A completed Contact record will look like this:
╔══════════════════╤══════════════════════════════════╤═════════════════════╗

If you decide to add a NOTE to this contact record, you can do so by pressing
<CTRL-N>. A note window will popup in the right hand section of the screen
and will show a menu for accessing the notes. To enter a note, select any of
the menu items and press <Enter>. If this is the first time a note is
entered for this contact, the update screen will automatically appear on the
screen. The following is an example of the Notebook screen:

Notice that the date, time, Name, and Company are automatically entered in
the note. Also notice that a 'C' appears in the upper right hand corner,
this indicates that this note is 'attached' to a Contact record. The cursor
is now positioned in the Description field, waiting for you to enter a
description. After entering the description, the cursor will jump to the
body area of the note.
If the information you type passes the right edge of the screen, the words
will simply wrap to the next line. To do any editing of the information you
are typing, simply use the cursor keys, INS, DEL, and Backspace to make
changes in the text. A contact record that has a note 'attached' to it will
look like the following:

Since ALL of these screens are processed in the same manner, I will describe
how to use them as if it was one screen.
Each of these tables display the records in the CONTACT database. Of course,
each table displays them in a different manner. What they have in common,
however, is the manner in which they are used.
The first thing to notice is that there is a 'Locate' field at the top of
each screen. This locate field is used to quickly (as opposed to using the
<UP> and <DOWN> keys) find a record based on the current index. For
instance, you are currently in the 'Record by Company' table. The table is
listed in alphabetical order, starting with the "A" companies. In order to
access a company that started with "P" would could either 1). Use the <DOWN>
key and scroll through several pages of company names until you got to the
"P's", or 2.) you could simply type 'p' on the keyboard and the computer will
instantly start looking for records that start with the letter 'P'. You will
also want to notice that case (Capital or lower case) is not used when doing
the search. "P" and "p" are treated as being the same.
You can further use the Locate function to narrow the search by continuing to
type more of the company name. When the first letter is pressed, the program
starts looking for records that begin with 'p'. If you were looking for
"Presidential Estate Realty" you could type in 'president' and as long as
there were no other 'president' company names, the highlight bar would move
directly to that record.
With the exception of the 'Record by Date' table, all the other index keys
are ten (10) characters in length. Again ALL the table functions is LeadMan
operate the SAME way...
Another method of accessing a record is through the use of the <UP> and
<DOWN> arrow keys.
As shown at the bottom of the screen, once the record you wish to access is
highlighted, you can use the <Enter> key to Display and/or Change that record.
Two other functions can be performed from the table screens. Adding and
Deleting a record.
Pressing the <INS> (the Insert) key from ANYWHERE in the table will bring up
a BLANK Contact entry screen with the words 'Record will be Added' at the top
of the screen. Pressing <DEL> (the Delete) key will DELETE, REMOVE,
OBLITERATE, DESTROY, etc. the record that is currently highlighted. The
reason behind all the verbiage is that you are only given ONE more chance to
change your mind when deleting a record.
After pressing the <DEL> key, the record will be displayed, the words 'Press
Enter to Delete' will be displayed at the top of the screen. If you PRESS
ENTER the record WILL BE DELETED with NO CHANCE OF GOING BACK AND
"UN-DELETING" IT! You can however, change your mind BEFORE PRESSING THE
<ENTER> KEY by pressing <ESC> or <CTRL-ESC>.
REMEMBER - Once you have deleted a record, your only recourse is to re-create
it from scratch. There is NO UN-DELETE function.
Finally, to return to the previous menus (either the Contacts or the Main
menu) press the <ESC> from the first field or the <CTRL-ESC> key from
anywhere on the screen.
One other item of interest. As mentioned earlier, the F1 (Function key) can
be used to 'pop-up' a help window describing each of the keys being used and
other useful information concerning the 'Record by ...' and table screens.
The Time Manager System:
The Time Manager item from the Main menu is used to access and record To-Do
lists, appointments, and NOTES about the days in your life. Upon entering
the system, the first screen you are presented with is a 'Perpetual
Calendar'. The screen will resemble a calendar with the current month, and
show the number of morning or after noon appointments that have been
scheduled. Special keys used in accessing the calendar are as follows:
<PGUP> Previous Month
<PGDN> Next Month
<CTRL-PGUP> Same Month - Previous Year
<CTRL-PGDN> Same Month - Next Year
<ESC> Quit or Exit
<F1> HELP
The cursor control keys (arrows) are used to highlight individual days. The
screen will look like this:

*** NOTES on TODO LIST and APPOINTMENTS ***
Currently, LeadMan does not automatically assign priorities, task completion
, or schedule conflicts. Nor does it allow for any type of 'graphical'
representation of the days activities. These features are all expected to be
available in future releases. It does however, create a place to record this
kind of information, and because of your ability to access it from anywhere
else while using LeadMan (using <CTRL-C>), I feel it will be useful in
planning your calls, appointments, last minute details of meetings, etc. If
you have never used a Time Management system or do not currently use a method
of recording to-do lists etc., this may be a good place to start.
To save information you have added to the daily appointment screen and the
NOTES, press <CTRL-Enter>. To Quit the daily appointment screen press
<CTRL-ESC>. One special note: If you have created a note for this day, or
have made changes to a note, you MUST use <CTRL-ENTER> to save the daily
appointment screen. If you QUIT this screen (by using <CTRL-ESC>) the
linking of the NOTE record will NOT be accomplished.

The NOTEBOOK System:
The NOTEBOOK system is used to create or maintain relatively random notes
about any particular subject you can think of. It is indexed based on the
description you enter when you create the note. Like the Contact system, it
uses tables to access the records and an entry screen to create, change, or
delete an entry.
Upon accessing the NOTEBOOK you will be presented with a table screen that
looks like this:

Of course, the first time you access the NOTEBOOK you will be presented with
the entry screen that looks like the screen on the following page. For now,
lets just assume that there IS an entry in the NOTEBOOK and proceed from
there.
Just as you did in the Contact section, items in the NOTEBOOK can be accessed
using the arrows keys or the 'Locate' field at the top of the screen.
Pressing <Enter> on a highlighted item will bring up the entry screen. As
before, <INS> is used to ADD a record, and <DEL> is used to DELETE a record.
The same warnings about DELETING an entry applies to the NOTEBOOK as well.
You are given ONE chance to change your mind about deleting a record, but
once you do it is DONE. There is NO un-delete function.
Pressing <Enter> on an item already in the NOTEBOOK table will bring up this
screen. If you are adding a record, the Description filed will be blank, and
the phrase at the top will say "Record will be Added".

could press 'p' and the bar would move to the first Panasonic printer it
found in the list. Pressing <Enter> on your printer's name starts the
process of actually printing the report.
If there is a problem, or if you decide that you do not want to print the
report, the <Esc> key will cancel the printing and return you to the
Reporting System main menu.
*** NOTE *** If your printer does not appear on the list, I can supply a
printer configuration file tailored to your specific needs. Just contact me
at the address or phone number stated earlier in this document.
In ALL cases (whether you print to the Screen, the Printer, or a File), once
the report is done you are returned to the Reporting System Menu.
More on the Other Options Menu:
When choosing the 'Other Options' item from the main menu your screen will
changes to look something like this:

Two other options exist on the Other Options menu that still need some
discussion. One is 'Reorganize Files'. Choosing this item will physically
remove deleted records from your data files. When doing the reorganization,
a message will appear at the bottom of the window telling you what file is
being reorganized. Three files are affected by this option. They are the
CONTACT, NOTEBOOK, and APPOINT files. The key files will also be regenerated
during this process. Because reorganization physically removes deleted
records, and regenerates the 'keys', you should see some performance
improvement following this procedure, particularly once you have added and/or
deleted several records to these files.
The second option concerns the 'Shelling out' to your word processor. You
may have noticed a 'Word Processor' menu item on the main menu. This option
will temporarily halt the running of LeadMan, and execute your word
processor. The 'shelling out' process involves saving LeadMan to a temporary
file on your disk, removing it from memory, and running your word processor.
Depending on your memory configuration, you should have all or nearly all of
your available memory to run your word processor. The 'Set Word Processor'
item from this menu is where you tell LeadMan where to find your word
processing program.
Choosing 'Set Word Processor' will bring up a window like the following:

Miscellaneous Notes:
Back up your data and 'key' files regularly!
This includes all files with an extension of .DAT and .Kxx
Reorganize your files regularly.
All labels, Rolodex cards, etc., from the Reporting system are designed for
'One-up' form-feed stock. Once again, if you need or want extra options,
just call me. (the Reporting System is an entirely separate program from
LeadMan and is very flexible).
If you experience any problems, report them to me.
